Preparing historic architecture for the future

An iconic building that delivers a contemporary take on Scottish history has been made fit for the future using technically-advanced textiles.

Strathisla Roofing has completely re-roofed The Broch in Perth by mechanically fixing  Protan SE1.6mm single ply PVC membrane, new thermal insulation, and a Protan vapour control layer, to enable the building- less than a decade old- to continue being the heart of the development for decades to come.

The project was more complex than a simple refurbishment of a block of flats: the six storey apartment block contains 20 flats, including a duplex penthouse, in a circular structure that replicates the lines of Scotland’s traditional fortified farms dating back 2500 years.

Explained Strathisla Roofing managing director Kevin Easson, “The main roof is predominantly semi-circular, with a rectangular insert. We also had to address the usual residential roof penetrations, roof safety system, and detail around the penthouse rooflight. The building itself is less than a decade old, so the roof shouldn’t have been failing already. The owners therefore wanted a solution that wouldn’t fail them, and give greater longevity than the fibreglass that had been used initially. Protan is proven to last over 30 years, even in the harsh Scandinavian climate where it was developed, so should withstand the Scottish highlands’ weather!”

Protan SE, available in 1.2mm, 1.6mm and 1.8mm, is engineered to cope with even the most extreme weather conditions without detriment: it is certified to ≤ -30°. Hot-air welded at joints and mechanically fixed to the roof, the membrane achieves durability in excess of 30 years, with air leakage controlled/minimised in line with latest Building Regulations. The PVC membrane is, under the Green Guide, accredited with achieving a A+ rating. Protan SE is just part of Protan’s comprehensive, quality offering, which includes green and protected roofing solutions, all fully BBA certified.

Established some 75 years ago, and still privately-owned, Protan is one of the biggest membrane manufacturers in Europe, with its manufacturing base in Norway, and operates in 50 countries worldwide.

A manufacturing member of SPRA, Protan can provide a full support service, from a comprehensive RIBA-approved CPD programme in single ply membranes, NBS specification and in-house CAD design through to technical advice from Protan UK’s Warrington office and training facility.
